Triumph at the 2022 British Schools' Orienteering Championships
The talented minds behind our Bronze Cadets STEM Club have been hard at work every Thursday lunchtime, developing an exciting project: a sustainable theme park for the future! Their innovative creation was officially entered into a national competition on Monday 17 March, and the team presented their project to a panel of judges, which included managing directors from Bosch and other leading engineering companies.
Following this, the team will attend an award ceremony where they'll meet other schools from across the country and showcase their impressive work.
This project is part of the Industrial Cadets Bronze Award, a nationally recognised scheme that allows students to apply their engineering and design skills. The judges will assess their teamwork, research, and creative ideas — and we should find out in the coming weeks how they performed. As part of the project, the group enjoyed a visit to a construction site organised by their mentor, Danielle Haskings from MCS, giving them valuable real-world insight.
The dedicated students behind this project are: Tilly, Mencia, Millie, Amy, Emilia and Carter.
The Bronze Cadets' theme park is set in the countryside and uniquely combines both above-ground and underground elements. One standout feature is their ingenious pulley system. As one lift descends, it generates energy stored in a battery, which can then power lifts to bring guests back above ground which is a clever and sustainable energy solution.
The park's rides and features stay true to its exciting theme of water, caves, pirates, and treasure. One of the highlights is the Classic Gravity Rollercoaster, which utilises gravity to minimise energy consumption. The Gravity-Powered Swing/Rotation Ride is inspired by the iconic pirate ship ride, providing a fun and nostalgic experience. For water enthusiasts, there are exciting Water Adventures, including a log flume, rapids, and a splash park with moving parts that generate energy.
There’s also a dedicated Pirate Show Area, where guests can enjoy themed performances. Adventurers can take on various Adventure Challenges, such as Walk the Plank, clip-and-climb walls, and high ropes courses. For a more interactive experience, guests can board boats and participate in the Interactive Water Battle, shooting water cannons to immerse themselves in the fun. Lastly, the Music Area offers a lively space for performances and entertainment.
The theme park's commitment to sustainability extends far beyond the rides:
The project doesn’t just focus on protecting the planet - it also aims to support the local community. The park plans to:
The Bronze Cadets have brilliantly combined creativity, science, and social responsibility in this project. We are incredibly proud of their dedication and teamwork, and we wish them the very best of luck as they present their sustainable theme park vision to the competition assessors.
We can't wait to hear the results and celebrate their achievements at the upcoming award ceremony!
