Year 6 pupils have been inspired to consider how laws are made in the UK and the role of the government in parliament during their citizenship sessions this term. Their learning was brought to life whilst watching a live parliamentary debate, touring of the House of Commons and participating in a workshop.
We were hoping to meet our local MP, Darren Jones, who was in residence but not available. We left him a ‘green slip’ and await his response. Watch this space!
In step with our citizenship studies, the girls have been learning about the geography of London, its landmarks, population and land use. At the Cenotaph, we learned about women's contributions in WWII, and walking past Horse Guards Parade was a firm favourite. Despite being in the city, the girls learned that green spaces were a feature, pausing in St James’ Park themselves for a rest and well-earned ice cream.
The whole day offered an opportunity to locate famous landmarks and linked beautifully with a firsthand experience and insight into how parliament and democracy works at the Houses of Parliament. No London tour would be complete without a photo opportunity with Big Ben. We will certainly be visiting again!
