Katarina makes the top ten - nationally!

Congratulations to Katarina who made the finals of the UK's national Junior Memory Championship, and finished 8th overall.

“Memory is the first stage of learning," according to Professor Sue Gathercole OBE, a Cognitive Psychologist specialising in Memory, Learning and Language. To support this Jonathan Hancock established the UK Junior Memory Championship.

His aim was to create a fun competition that promoted memory skills in children, as they can have a significant impact on their learning.

“You don’t simply learn to learn by learning,” he explains. “You have to have access to a range of strategies.”

At the Redmaids’ High Junior School, we have been taking part in this challenge for over ten years, and we are delighted that Katarina made the final this year. This is a tremendous achievement.

Mrs Wakelin, our Head of Learning Enhancement said, “Developing and practising memory strategies demonstrates to our girls how exercising their memory, like a muscle, makes it fit for effective learning. It also nurtures flexibly-minded, creative and confident learners.

“Katarina, not only applied these memory strategies well, but practised them and worked hard with focus and concentration to achieve the high scores she has and this national position.

“An achievement to be very proud of with skills to take forward in her learning.”
