Meet our new Head Girls

Today we are delighted to introduce our newly appointed Head Girls Mia and Ammaarah.

Over the next year, Mia and Ammaarah will head up our Sixth Form Leadership team, serving as key ambassadors and guiding figures within our school community. 

Here we find out a little more about them...

When did you join Redmaids’ High School?

Mia: I joined in Year 3, so I’ve been at Redmaids’ High since the beginning!

Ammaarah: I joined the school in Year 6 having moved from London. It was a big change, but everyone made me feel so welcome!

What subjects are you studying in Sixth Form?

Mia: I’m studying Latin, English and Psychology at a higher level, and Biology, Mathematics and Philosophy at a standard level for the International Baccalaureate.

Ammaarah: I'm studying A Level Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and I'm doing Creative Writing as an Elective.

What do you love most about Redmaids’ High?

Mia: I love the opportunities that we are offered. The school provides us with the chance to attend or apply for countless talks, trips and extra-curricular activities. I’m very passionate about Drama, and despite not taking it as a subject, there’s always an opportunity to get involved in productions and to watch performances.

Ammaarah: Similar to Mia, I love all the different opportunities I can be involved in; from Drama productions and sports matches, to the more unique REDTalks and Redmaidio. I'm also so appreciative of the beautiful vast grounds we get to enjoy every day.

I'd say most importantly though, I love the warm and inclusive environment at the school; I'm always surrounded by amazing friends, and our incredible teachers are always supporting and encouraging us to do our best.

What inspired you to go for the position of Head Girl?

Mia: I’ve been interested in the position of Head Girl from the moment I joined the Senior School. Initially, I thought about applying in order to challenge myself and develop my confidence. However, I really value being able to hear the opinions and views of others. I’ve found that I love to discuss, voice and share these views, and wish to aim to create a more welcoming and inclusive community by doing so.

Ammaarah: Having been inspired by previous Head Girls, I’ve always thought about going for the position myself. It’s definitely surreal to be in this role now! For me, Head Girl has always being something to aspire to, and it’s such a privilege to be able to give back to a school that has given me so much.

What changes would you like to bring to the school as part of the Head Girls team?

Mia: I would love to help provide further support from the Sixth Form to the younger year groups. This would involve easier access to conversations with the student leadership team, a defined tutoring system and option support for subjects.

I’d be interested in more collaboration with other schools for events and discussion groups too, in addition to a variety of volunteering opportunities. I’d like to help better prepare all students for the future, which, for example, might involve external talks or work experience for broader curriculum subjects.

Ammaarah: I believe our differences bring us closer together, and so, I’d love to strengthen the connections within our school community through celebrating these differences in dynamic and creative ways. Through music, literature, language and food (of course!), we can create an even stronger community. One of my ideas for this would be to introduce ‘Language of the Month’ to encourage the exploration into new languages and customs.

What are you most looking forward to throughout your year as a Head Girl?

Mia: I’m really looking forward to meeting other people. I can’t wait to get to work with the new leadership team, additionally gaining the opportunity to talk to parents, staff, students and people that have an impact on our school community.

Ammaarah: To connecting with and getting to know the rest of the school community more. I’d love to hear everyone’s ideas about how we can improve our school, and if you ever see me in the hallways, do come and say hi!

I’m also excited to work with the wider leadership team and create positive change within school. And I'm really looking forward to wearing those stylish robes on Founders’ Commemoration Day, and definitely looking forward to embarrassing myself in the Head Girl end of term reports…

Finally, can you share with us what you think will be the best thing about working alongside each other as part of the school’s Head Girls team?

Mia: Ammaarah and I have worked together before - we’ve been on School Council, in public speaking teams and in various casts. I have seen Ammaarah demonstrate passion, intelligence and provide perspective, and I’m so excited to have the chance to learn from her. I’m certain that our different ideas and approaches will work together to positively influence the school.

Ammaarah: I’m really looking forward to working with Mia - she’s so hard-working and creative. Being on the debating team with her showed me just how well we work together and complement each other, and I know we can always enjoy ourselves and have a laugh whilst also getting things done efficiently and to the best of our ability. I’m very excited for all the role holds, and I can’t wait to share this experience with her!
