GCSE results 2019

Redmaids High, Bristol - GCSE results 2019

Across all GCSE subjects, almost half of all entries (46%) were awarded a 9 or 8 (previously A*), while nearly a quarter (24%) scored the top 9 grade.

Almost two thirds (65%) of entries gained 9-7 grades (formerly A*-A grades).

There were notable performances in Music, Russian and German, where 100% of students gained 9s, 8s or 7s (A* or A equivalent).

Well over eight out of ten entries in art, design technology (food) and dance gained the same impressive scores.

Furthermore, in biology, chemistry and physics, more than three quarters of all entries - 77% - gained grades of 9, 8 and 7.

Individual success came for many girls including a number who achieved straight 9s in all subjects which when the new grading system was introduced was considered virtually impossible:

  • Maths lover Saskia, gained 10 grade 9s (A*s) plus the highest mark of A^ (distinction) in further maths,
  • Lily, who achieved 10 grade 9s and an A* in further maths, is considering a future in engineering, and
  • History lover Grace also gained 10 grade 9s and an A* in further maths.

Saskia, aged 16, who wants to study maths at university, said: “I’m so excited. I’m taking the IB Diploma in the Sixth Form. There’s no better place and I wouldn’t have done anything differently.”

This is the first year of results in dance GCSE. This qualification is co-taught at Redmaids’ High by Dawn Clark who trained at the Royal Ballet School with Darcey Bussell. The GCSE involves a written exam plus practical assessments covering choreography, group and individual performance.

“Dance in all its forms is hugely popular with all ages," said Ms Clark, a professional dancer for 15 years. "It is a wonderful subject to take as it maintains physical activity which is so important for general health, and stimulates creativity, team work and confidence.”

Commenting on today's results, Headmistress Isabel Tobias said: “We offer a broad curriculum with specialist teachers, enabling our students to select a balanced range of studies at GCSE that inspire them both academically and on a personal level.

“I’m absolutely delighted for the girls today. They have worked extremely hard and mostly met or exceeded their expectations.”
