Lest we forget: a very special remembrance Sunday

Roy BakerThis Remembrance Sunday will mean something very special to one member of our community in particular: Roy Baker, our school transport manager. Today, Roy will be marching at the cenotaph with The Royal Logistic Corps (RLC).

Roy served for 41 years in total, starting in The Royal Corps of Transport, (later named The Royal Logistic Corps) and ended his soldier career as a Warrant Officer Class 1, Regimental Sergeant Major. In 1999 Roy received the Queen's Commission, transferring from soldier to commissioned officer and he left the Army in 2017 as Lieutenant Colonel (LE), the highest rank his commission would allow.

During his career Roy was deployed on numerous exercises in Europe and the Oman as well as operations to Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan.  He also served as part of the UN peacekeeping forces in Croatia during the Balkans war and Cyprus on the Green Line in Nicosia.

Roy, who joined our team at Redmaids' High in 2019 and is a much valued member of our community, says, "For all members of the Military and emergency services, remembrance day is a poignant reminder of our time in service, remembering those we have served with and so often those we lost.

"As such, today will be tinged with sadness but also pride having been given the opportunity to show our solidarity to one another and remember those we served with, those who didn't come home, those who came home with life changing injuries and those that came home but couldn't readjust."

We're very proud of you Roy, and we give thanks to all who serve/have served to defend our democratic freedoms and way of life.

Don't forget to register for our upcoming Senior School Entrance Examination on Saturday 8 January.
