News Hot off the Press: Our Junior School team has beaten stiff competition from across the area to win the area heat of the National Quiz Club Inter-School Science Championship.

Ten teams from schools in Bristol, Taunton and Gloucestershire gathered at Badminton School for the area heat of this prestigious science competition.

From the solar system to the smallest creatures on earth, from inventions that transform your world to science in our everyday lives, the quiz consisted of 30 multiple choice questions covering subjects such as human biology, astronomy, great inventors and inventions, physics, zoology, ecology, earth science, oceanography, geology, meteorology, botany and chemistry.

The questions carried a maximum total score of 1800 points, and Alice.G and Bella.S (Year 5) and Anna.G and Isla.D (Year 6) girls achieved 1355 – over 300 points ahead of their nearer competitor, Queen’s School Taunton who scored 1010.

“I am delighted for these girls, who have worked so hard over the last few months to develop and consolidate their knowledge,” said Mr Hayward, the school’s Science Co-ordinator.

“All four are part of our weekly Science Quiz Club, and when they were selected to compete at this event, their peers shared their specialist knowledge with them, to give our school team the best chance of success.

“It felt like a real team effort, and as a result, these four girls were able to confidently answer multiple-choice questions such as:

“The term endothermic refers to animals that are: Warm blooded, polar, desert, cold blooded?

“Renal refers to which part of the body? Heart kidney, liver, lungs.

“What was the invention of Alessandro Volta? Battery, transformer, dynamo, coffee maker.

“The team will now progress through to the national finals, which in previous years have been held in the Natural History Museum in Oxford University or in London. So, as you can imagine, excitement levels are extremely high!”
