Our Senior School production, Looking for Mermaids, was a wonderful celebration of the skill and talent we have across the school community.
Our Head of English Mrs Rodliffe adapted the timeless and beautiful fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen to create a unique, contemporary script. Our Music Technician Miss Bersweden then set this script to music, while Emily in Year 13 directed the live musical performances and Mollie, also in Year 13, devised original choreography. Students also made up the technical crew, and helped with costumes, props and make-up.
The result was a magical and ethereal production, which showcased some fantastic dramatic performances. It was a special moment when Lucy, as the Little Mermaid, sang a song written by Poppy in Year 10, and Lottie had the audience in stitches as the Emperor who epitomised adult vanity and misused power. It was also a moving moment and tribute to his immense body of work when Hans Christian Anderson himself, played by Tia in Year 12, passed gently away.
In addition to many stand out individual performances, the ensembles provided fantastic set pieces of song and physical theatre.
This creative collaboration between staff and students was all brought to life by our Head of Drama Ms McCormack who said, “In this production, we have embraced stories that have been passed down to us, at the same time as giving our talented, spirited, intelligent girls, the chance to re-invent them for themselves.”
