We are delighted to announce the appointment of Michael Backett as the new Deputy Head of the Junior School. He will work alongside Anthea Newton, who takes on the role of Head of Junior School from September 2026, succeeding Lisa Brown.

Michael brings with him a wealth of experience in primary education and leadership, along with a commitment to pupil development and school improvement. He is excited to join the Junior School and contribute to its continued success.

Michael began his teaching career at West Ham Church Primary School in Stratford, London, where he completed his NQT year and spent five years in the classroom. During this time, he developed a particular enthusiasm for primary physical education, going on to become a lead practitioner for P.E. across the London Borough of Newham.

He later joined Cyril Jackson Primary School in Tower Hamlets, where he was appointed Phase Leader before progressing to Assistant Headteacher with responsibility for assessment. During his time there, Michael played a key role in the school’s journey from a ‘Good’ to an ‘Outstanding’ rating under the Ofsted framework — an achievement he remains especially proud of.

Following a move to Bristol with his family, Michael continued to build on his leadership experience as Deputy Head at Frenchay Primary School in South Gloucestershire, a position he has held for the past seven and a half years. In his current role, he leads key areas including mathematics, P.E., assessment, and data, while also contributing to the strategic direction of the school as part of the Senior Leadership Team.

Outside of school, Michael’s passion lies in sport – both playing and watching. Football, rugby, and basketball have been lifelong hobbies. In his spare time, he regularly coaches his sons’ under-11 and under-7 football teams on The Downs.

Speaking about his new role, Michael said: “I am so excited for the opportunity to work at Redmaids’ High Junior School and can’t wait to get started. I look forward to being part of such a special community and getting to work with the fantastic pupils.”  We warmly welcome Michael to the Junior School and look forward to the positive impact he will bring!
