We were delighted to welcome world-renowned percussionist, Dame Evelyn Glennie, to School recently to give a masterclass to our own aspiring musicians and a wonderful concert to our community.

Year 12 A Level Music Student and talented percussionist, Katie England has written this wonderful report on Dame Evelyn’s visit:

It was an immense pleasure for Redmaids’ High to welcome Dame Evelyn Glennie — the world-renowned percussionist whose performances have graced stages from the BBC Proms to the 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony.

On Friday, students from the School’s various percussion ensembles were treated to an unforgettable masterclass with Evelyn. She shared her insights, experiences, and practice techniques with warmth and enthusiasm, her natural charm and deep passion for her craft shining throughout the session. She began by encouraging the students to reflect on who they were as percussionists — reminding them that they are, primarily, creators of sound who just happen to be musicians. This thought-provoking perspective resonated strongly with many of those present, and her words are sure to guide and inspire their future musical journeys.

Saturday’s concert proved equally extraordinary. Staff, students, and alumnae filled Redland Hall — in both the orchestra and audience — eager for the chance to witness Evelyn’s artistry firsthand. Her performance of ‘Dreamachine’ by Michael Daugherty was nothing short of spellbinding. Watching her move seamlessly from the excitement of the marimba to the whirlwind of auxiliary percussion, from the serenity of the vibraphone to the sharp intensity of the snare drum, was breathtaking. Her fluidity, confidence, and command of each instrument left everyone in awe, and it was an immense honour to have her as the concert’s soloist.

Hosting Dame Evelyn for these two inspiring days was a true privilege. Her exceptional musicianship, coupled with her kindness and uplifting spirit, has left a lasting impression on both students and staff. We hope she enjoyed her time with our school community — and that we will have the joy of welcoming her back again soon.

The visit by Dame Evelyn was the most recent in a series of masterclasses and concerts here at Redmaids’ High which has seen the likes of Nicola Benedetti CBE, Elin Manahan Thomas and Isata Kanneh-Mason visit the School to inspire our own musicians and delight the school community in equal measure.
